This year, our country will host the 6th International Conference on Sustainable Tourism: Planet, People, Peace (P3) –the most prominent event in the region and the only international venue on sustainable tourism hosted by Costa Rica.
Accordingly, the International P3 Conference will mark the high point to celebrate in the country the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, so declared by the United Nations General Assembly. The past five conferences brought together over 1,100 national and international participants and over 110 world experts in sustainable tourism, from 26 different countries in the 5 continents.
Mauricio Ventura, Minister of Tourism, explained that this P3 conference is far more special for the tourism industry because, in addition to celebrating the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, the UN honored our country by appointing President Luis Guillermo Solís as a Special Ambassador, no doubt strengthening the position of Costa Rica.
"P3 should be conceived as an event living up to the spirit of our Tourism Development Model, being a destination that has promoted integrated sustainability in three lines of action: society, environment and economy, as a tool to promote culture and legitimacy of the peoples, and boost social and economic welfare of communities. For this reason, we are deeply committed to celebrating a new P3 conference and taking advantage of this momentum, with the declaration by the UN, to consolidate our image in terms of sustainable tourism," added Ventura.
This initiative is a recollection of the potential of tourism to help achieve the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
"In Costa Rica, we contribute to this initiative by hosting the most prominent event on sustainable tourism in the region. The International Year aims to support a change in policies, business practices and consumer behavior for a more sustainable tourism industry to effectively contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," stated Jackeline López, President of the Costa Rican Chamber of Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism (CANAECO, in Spanish).
The main objective of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism is to celebrate and promote the contribution of the tourism industry to building a better world. Along these lines, the P3 conference has become a learning platform, bringing together entrepreneurs and world leaders from different sectors to exchange knowledge and share experiences.
"The name 'Planet, People, Peace' represents the perspective from which issues are approached, showing our commitment to making a contribution to the Planet from the very essence of People, sharing our experience as a country of Peace," concluded López.
P3 strengthens the position of Costa Rica as a responsible destination, highlighting the efforts, best practices and innovative initiatives of the public and private sector in the country.
